Barn-Hayloft / Studio Conversion

Roof
Initially, the roof was to remain intact except for over the new dormer on the
north side of the barn. Upon closer inspection, the existing cedar shakes were
found to be in very poor condition. The decision was made to replace all of the
current shakes with new ones. The decision was also made to allow the shakes
to age naturally instead of staining them prior to installation.

In keeping with age of the barn, copper flashing was used in all cases where
flashing was called for. A special rubber covering was used under the shakes on
the lower pitch on the roof's north side to prevent damage from ice dams. Also
a copper ridge vent (not shown yet) is being created to cap the ridge where the
large support beam was added to the barn. We have also included the soffit work
along with the roof. The soffit were made from rough sawn tongue & groove cedar.
